School Travel Plan
About our School
Ashbrook Junior School is a community junior school situated in Borrowash, just to the East of the city of Derby. The school shares its campus with the infant school.
There are approximately 180 children on roll, aged 7 – 11 years old.
The school day starts at 9:00, but pupils are allowed on site from 8:45 onwards. School finishes at 3:30. There is an after school and breakfast clubs each day of the week which run from 7:30 – 9:00, the after school club runs until 6:00, car park on the school premises to facilitate this.
Why are we doing a travel plan?
We are involved in school travel planning because of safety concerns particularly for children who walk to school. The areas around Nottingham/Derby Road and Victoria Avenue are of particular concern. The school is also committed to the role travel plans play with regard to Healthy Schools and Every Child Matters in promoting issues regarding keeping healthy and staying safe.
How the school community has been involved in our plan
A detailed school travel plan was undertaken with parents and pupils and in the early Summer term 2006 – 46% of survey forms were returned.
The development of the plan has involved parents and children. The results were fed back to stakeholders via Newsletters, which are published on the school website.
What are the current travel modes and travel preferences?
12% of children travel up to half a mile by car.
17% of children live more than 1 mile away from school.
A third of children would like to cycle to school however the reasons for not travelling this way relate to concerns about road safety, as well as issues regards lack of storage. A number of children travel by car but would actually like to walk, however the lack of crossing facilities is of great concern to parents and therefore these children do not walk to school, but instead are driven by their parents.
What do we want our travel plan to achieve?
We want to:
- increase walking from 62% to at least 74% by June 2007
- reduce the percentage of children travelling to school by car from 33% to at least 21% by June 2007
- promote car sharing on the school journey as a viable option for those who have to travel by car.
- to reduce congestion around the school by investigating the use of other parking spaces close by - this is called Park & Stride.
- Explore possibilities for addressing concerns regarding the provision of crossing facilities on Victoria Avenue and Nottingham/Derby Road.
- To maintain contact with the police to ensure cycle training can be provided for Year 6 pupils.
Our school travel action plan and proposalsWe hope to achieve our travel plan objectives by:· encouraging all children to walk to school if possible and especially those who live less than ½ mile from school and who currently travel by car, by promoting the health benefits of walking and taking part in Walk to School activities.· Consider using the STP funding to provide shelter for parents and possible provision for cycles.· Put parents who are prepared to car share in touch with one another.· Contact local shop owners with regard to using their sites for park and stride with the possibility of arranging a walking bus from this point· Work alongside the SCP service to assist with the recruitment of a crossing patrol. We need to involve everyone in the school community to make our plan a success, this includes:· children and parents· the head teacher· members of the school staff· governors· the school council· members of our local community· the school travel and road safety team· the School Crossing Patrol Service· Ashbrook Infant and Nursery School.
