Dear Parents/Carers,

Riding Bikes to School

We are aware that several children have been cycling to school and leaving their bikes near the school gates.   Concerns have been raised recently that there have been some incidents of unsafe cycling.   One child narrowly missed a car causing it to brake suddenly.   Another has been cycling too close to other children on the school path.

From next Monday, any child cycling must abide by the following rules if they wish to cycle and leave their bike on school premises.

·       Only children in Years 5 and 6 are permitted to cycle and only if they have passed levels 1 and 2 cycling proficiency.

·       Helmets must be worn.

·       Bikes must not be brought through the Infant or Junior playgrounds.

·       Children must not ride their bikes through the school drive.

These rules are in place in order to protect all children including the cyclist.

We thank all parents in advance for their cooperation in this.

Please note that cycles are left at the owner’s risk and the school can accept no responsibility for loss of, or damage to, cycles left on the school premises.

Mrs.Wiltshire’s Tribute

The collection in memory of Mrs.Megan Wiltshire will be closing on Wednesday May 26th  and we invite any parents who would like to contribute to send their donation by that date, in a sealed envelope, either to this school or to the Infants.   Our collection will go to the Treetops Hospice at Risley.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Summer Term

We are hopeful that the warmer weather is here to stay for a while and in view of this we would like to remind parents to provide a sun hat and to make sure that their child has a water bottle with their name clearly marked.   At the end of each day a number of water bottles are left in school with no identifying mark which means that they have to be discarded.

ACES

ACES stands for All Children Exercise Simultaneously.   On Wednesday May 5th all our pupils enjoyed an afternoon of exercise doing skipping, dance, potato race, parachute and football dribble shoot.

Congratulations

Our congratulations go to Miss Bower and Mr. Harvey Stevens who were married during the May Day weekend.

Garden Area

The Church Wilne Rotary Club has very generously supplied us with a garden growing-box and planted it up with some strawberries.   If any parent would like to organise a gardening club or just come along and help out we would be very grateful.    Please phone or call in at school.

Currently, we are awaiting further advice from our professional associations and will inform Year 6 parents early next week if we will be administering the SATs this year.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Celebration  Concert

On Sunday March 21st a group of our children joined with other schools and colleges taking part in a musical celebration at Derby Assembly Rooms.   It was an excellent afternoon’s entertainment with the Junior age children singing four songs and thoroughly enjoying the rest of the varied programme.

Our children were a credit to the school in their appearance and behaviour.   We received a very nice letter from the Music Partnership for Derbyshire complimenting us on our exemplary behaviour and performance.  A copy has been given to each child who took part.  Our thanks go to Mrs. Cresswell who has trained the children over several weeks, Mrs.Enright who has practiced with them during lesson time and lunch breaks and accompanied them to the concert on Sunday and of course to Rachel Wilkes and Melanie Pierson of the Partnership, taking us through rehearsals and the performance on the day, giving us the opportunity to take part in such a wonderful experience.    And of course last, but certainly not least, we say thank you to all the parents and families who supported the children by attending the concert.

Easter Experience

On Thursday and Friday the children went to Borrowash Methodist Church to find out about Easter Week.   They had a great time carrying out interactive activities and were presented with an Easter egg at the end.   The helpers at the church commented on Ashbrook’s excellent behaviour;  we are very proud of them.   Look out for photos on the website.

Trainers in School

Some weeks ago, after discussion with members of the Parent Forum, we made the decision on footwear, that  children wear only school shoes throughout the day.   The teaching staff report that this has been a very successful exercise.   It  prevents valuable teaching time being wasted while children change footwear at the end of break and dinner times.   Trainers still need to be brought to school for outdoor P.E./games lessons.

Disco

The children enjoyed an end of term disco organised by the Parent Association on Wednesday evening.   Our thanks go to Samantha and Karen for overseeing it and giving freely of their time again.   A profit of £244.00 was made which will go into providing benefits for the children.

P.A. Easter Raffle

Please return all raffle tickets by Wednesday March 31st as the draw will take place at the coffee and Cake sale in the afternoon.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Reminders

School will close on Thursday next week February 11th for the end of term break.   Friday the 12th is an INSET day when we are closed to the children.

School Photographs

All orders for photographs to be received in school by Thursday February 11th.

Haiti Earthquake

The children in Years 5 and 6 have been discussing the terrible disaster in Haiti as part of their R.E. work and had asked if they could do a cake sale.   This has been held today and we thank you for all donations of cakes and for supporting the cause by giving the children spending money to purchase.   In addition, school has decided to have a non-uniform day next Thursday February 11th.   We ask the children to contribute £1 for wearing non-uniform which can be in red or blue (the colours of Haiti, but not school uniform) or they can wear fancy dress.   Funds raised from this event will be collated with other donations and the proceeds from the cake sale and sent to support UNICEF.

Cyberbullying on Facebook

We have had a few incidents of children complaining that others have been “cyber bullying” on Facebook.   As our Anti-Bullying Policy states “Cyberbullying is the use of ICT, particularly mobile phones and the internet to deliberately upset someone else”

We ask parents to be vigilant in monitoring their child’s use of the internet and should they be concerned then visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents or www.Ceop.gov.uk.   We also refer you to facebook’s privacy policy that states children under 13 should not register for an account.

Maths Evening

Thank you to all parents who supported the Maths evening last night to learn about the way in which we teach multiplication and division.   We intend to follow this up with a further evening looking at addition and subtraction, on Thursday March 11th.    More details nearer the time.   Thank you to Miss Bower for organising these events.

P.A. and Extended Schools

Thank you to the Parent Association for running the coffee morning yesterday where they raised £30.00.   Parents/carers were invited to come in and chat to Jayne Walters the Family Research Worker and Wendy Bennett our School Nurse.   We intend to run a further coffee morning next term.   Should you wish to speak to either of the two ladies above a leaflet is available in school or you can call Jayne direct on 07732 041376 or Wendy on 01332 288782.    Wendy’s next drop in session will be on Thursday March 11th.
