Dear Parents/Carers,
School Closure
School will close next Friday July 24th for the summer holiday. On that day the children will be able to bring in a toy or game but please, no electronic games and nothing which is very expensive or very valuable.
Parent Forum
Following a joint parent/governor meeting this term a parents’ forum has been set up. There will be more details about this in September
Pantomime Visit
Following the parents’ meeting a December outing has been booked and we are letting you know about the block booking made for Cinderella at the Derby Assembly Rooms on December 12th at 1.30 p.m. The price per child will be £15 and this covers the admission plus coach fare. There will be more information in September when you will be able to book your place.
Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly
We shall have a special assembly for our Year 6 children who will be leaving us next week to go on to their secondary schools. It will be in the afternoon starting at 2.00 p.m.
Y6 Parents, grandparents and other family members will be most welcome.
P.A. News
The blue bags which went out for collection of unwanted clothes, curtains, bedding, shoes, bags and belts will be picked up on Tuesday July 21st at about 9.30 a.m. We do ask that you do not bring your bags in to school before the 21st as we have nowhere to store them and they present a health and safety hazard. Please note that no bags can be accepted after first thing on Tuesday morning.
End of Term Disco
Our end of term disco for the children was a great success on Wednesday evening and a clear profit of £318.00 was made. Thank you to Sam and Karen who once again did all the organising and all the parents who supported us.

Classes 3/4J and 3/4H have earned a non uniform day and this will be taken on Friday July 24th – the last day of term.

SATs
Well done to our Year 6 children. I hope they are pleased with their achievements. Our overall marks are: Maths 79.4% Level 4 with 31% at Level 5, English 79.4% with 26% at Level 5, Science 87% with 40% at Level 5. Thank you to all staff and parents who have supported the children throughout the year.
Aztec Week
Last week was an excellent, busy, creative week. We were pleased to see so many of you at the assembly this afternoon to join in the celebration of work.
Cadbury World Trip
This was the first time we have had a whole school educational visit. The really enjoyed the trip and we hope to have another whole school venture next year.
RAM Company
On Tuesday afternoon this week the whole school enjoyed a performance of folk music by the Ram Company, a team of eight or so musicians

End of Term Disco
The P.A. has organised our last disco for this academic year. It will be next Wednesday July 15th from 6.00 to 7.30 p.m. with the theme being a Beach Party. So dig out the sunglasses and beach wear for an enjoyable time. The cost is £2 per child and refreshments will be available but not included in the ticket price. If you would like your child/ren to attend please complete the form on the reverse of this newsletter and return it by Tuesday July 14th. No applications will be received after this date and no admission at the door without a ticket.

On Friday 17th July we have a football fun day provided by Soccer Schools. Children can wear their football strip or any other sports wear for a donation of £1.50 to cover the cost of the day.

Dear Parents/Carers,
SATs
We have had our English and Maths results back so far but are still awaiting Science results. The children will be told their English and Maths scores today and we will let you know the overall percentages next week when, hopefully, all results will be received and have been checked.
Sporting News
We were very pleased to see so many parents, carers and friends at our Sports Day on Tuesday July 1st. We were fortunate in having a dry, sunny day and although it was perhaps hotter then we would have anticipated the children performed well and thoroughly enjoyed the morning. Thank you for your continued support.
Aztec Week
The children have had a very creative week working on the Aztecs. They have been in mixed age classes each afternoon taking part in a number of activities, some led by teachers from Friesland School. It has been a most interesting exercise. Many thanks to Miss Julian for organising the event and to everyone who has contributed to making it a great success. We look forward to more activities in the future and we hope to see you next Friday the 10th at 2.00p.m. for our presentation of the work the children have done.
Swimming
Private lessons are available at the Queen’s Leisure Centre, Derby on Sunday mornings for age 4 upwards at a cost of £3 per session. A leaflet is available from school or you can contact Becky Edwards on 01332 721797 or John Flint on 01332 678080.
Cadbury World Trip
Just a few reminders about next Monday’s visit. The children need to be in school by 8.20 a.m. in order to leave promptly at 8.30. They will need to wear school uniform and bring a waterproof coat. There will be the opportunity spend money in the shop if they wish to but £3 maximum please.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Deputy Headteachers’ Conference
We were asked by the local authority if we would send two groups of children to take part in Curriculum Innovation Workshops at the Deputy Headteachers’ conference at Pride Park.
We selected children from across the school to take part. Richard Foulkes, an adviser from the Local Authority came to see us at the end of the day to compliment the children. Their behaviour and attitude were exemplary and they were excellent ambassadors for our school. Well done to all the children and a big thank you to: Chloe, Emily and Annie in Year 3, Daniel, Ben, Olivia, Oliver, Zoe, Dayton, Charlie, Mollie and Jack in Year 4, George, Aimee, Niamh, James and Remi in Year 5 and Tuesday, Tyler, Jamey-Leigh, Matthew, Sam and Tamzyn in Year 6.
My Money Week
Next week we have a programme of activities related to money. Please see the parent information on the reverse of this newsletter.
During the afternoons next week the children will also be taking part in Aztec workshops supported by Friesland School.

Sporting News
We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday June 30th for our Sports Day and we hope the weather will stay fine for us this year. Please see the attached letter for details.
On Tuesday 23rd June, Ben, Matthew, Tyler, James, Robert, Sean, Channon, Jamey-Leigh, Jennifer, Reece, and Liam went to Alvaston Park. This was the conclusion of their six week BMX sessions.
On Thursday 25th June, Jessica, Niamh, Minnie, Jennifer, Luke, Jake, Jack, Lewis, Matthew, Joshua, and Ben attended a Kwik Cricket tournament at Elvaston Cricket Club. The results were Ashbrook 230 to Chellaston B Team’s 243 and Ashbrook 232 to Chellaston A Team’s 252.
Both these events were enjoyed by all and the children behaved extremely well. Our thanks to Mrs.Calcutt, Mrs.Malcolm, Mrs.Clements, Mrs.Hallam and Miss Riley for helping with transport.

For Sports Day, hopefully June 30th, the children should know which colour team they are in and we ask that they wear a T shirt of that colour. If your child is unsure then please do not hesitate to check with the class teacher.
On Wednesday 17th June Ashbrook Football Team’s A and B challenged Risley School to two friendly football matches.
Results: Team A, Ashbrook 3 – 3 Risley
Team B, Ashbrook 4 – 3 Risley
Enjoyment was had by all and both teams showed good sportsmanship.

School Photographs
The photographer from St.Ann’s Studios came back last Friday to re-take the class group photos. We are very pleased with the improvement in quality and presentation. The proofs have been sent home for you to look at and order from but we have larger clear copies available in school if you would like to view them. All orders to be in school by Monday June 29th at the latest.
Sporting News
On Thursday 11th June the Ashbrook Cricket team, Lewis B, Ben C, Matthew W, Jack G, Jake W-R, Luke C, Ben J, Jennifer M, Georgia B, and Joshua F, took part in a Kwik Cricket tournament at Elvaston Cricket Club. They played St.John Fisher School and won, 261 runs to 189 and then played Chellaston School and won 247 runs to 200.
The children behaved impeccably and showed good sportsmanship. Our thanks to Mrs.Clements and Miss Riley for helping with transport.
Family Support
Family Support worker Jane Walters will be at the school gate today giving out leaflets containing information on ways in which she may be able to help. She will then have an “open surgery” in school on Monday June 15th from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m.
Reminders
We have an open evening for all parents on Tuesday June 16th from 6.30p.m. when you will be able to tour the school and meet the teacher in whose class your child will be next year. Attendance forms have been sent home but if you have not returned yours yet please do so in order that we may have some idea of the numbers of parents to be expected.

Life Education
The Year 5 and 6 classes each had a session in the Life Education bus yesterday looking at drugs education. This visit was very kindly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Church Wilne.
Performing Arts
The children from Year 5 attended a Performing Arts demonstration group at Friesland School on Wednesday this week. They were able to join in various activities and represented the school well.
Parent Association
As we told you in last week’s newsletter the family Bingo Evening was a great success raising £245. Thank you to Mr.O’Sullivan for being our caller and to Sam and Karen, for all their efforts in organising and running the show again.

Arts Week
The children have had an exciting Arts week where each class has studied the work of Miro, Picasso, Seurat, Mondrian, Matisse and Kandinsky. Please feel free to come in and see the range of work that the children have produced.
Choir and Recorders
There will be no choir meetings after the holiday but recorders will continue as usual.
ElvastonCastle
Elvaston Castle Country Park will have an open day on June 20th from 10.30a.m. to 4.30 p.m. There will be an opportunity to look round the nature reserve, join in many activities, have-a-go sessions and walks throughout the day. There will be bee box making, basket making, tree climbing, bush craft, chainsaw carving and giant willow sculpture. Meet at the main car park and although the event is free there will be a car park charge. For more details contact 01332 571342.

New Brownies Wanted
2nd Borrowash Brownies are looking for girls aged 7 and 8 to become part of our Brownie Pack. We meet on Mondays at the Community Centre on Ashbrook Avenue from 5.00 to 6.30 p.m. We have lots of fun and enjoy games, crafts, working towards badges, Brownie Camp and lots more. Our subs are £1.50 per session. We DON’T meet in the school holidays, bank holidays or INSET days. We are looking for girls to come along and spend a few weeks with us to see if they would like to become part of our team. Reminders
SATs week begins next Monday 11th May.
Year 5 pupils will be at West Park School, Spondon, on Monday 11th May for their Taster Day. The children need to be at school by the normal time of 8.45 a.m. as the bus will leave at 8.50 prompt. A packed lunch will be required and they will return to Ashbrook before 3.25 p.m.

Year 5/6 Visit to The National Space Centre
The children in Years 5 and 6 had a fantastic day at the National Space Centre, Leicester yesterday and represented the school very well.
ACES – (All Children Exercise Simultaneously)
All the children in school were involved in physical activities this afternoon. They took part in javelin, skipping, dancing, relay races, target games and parachute games. Refreshments were provided, free of charge, by our P.A. ladies. All the events were very much enjoyed.

Security
A number of parents have been dropping their children off in the school car park or near to the kitchen, in the mornings. Our school car park is very busy at this time and is not a safe place for children. Please do not drop children off here; we have a safe pedestrian entrance which we expect them to use.

Musical Celebration
Many thanks to Mrs.Sarah Cresswell for organising this wonderful evening. It was lovely to see all the different musical talent that the children have put together. Well done all the children who took part and their families for supporting them whilst learning to play an instrument or practising with the choir. We also say thank you to the parents who attended and the ladies of the P.A. who supported it by running a second hand uniform sale, raffle and refreshments. £103 was raised which was excellent.

Cadbury World
Many thanks to the School Council for offering ways to reduce the cost of the visit to Cadbury World. They hope to do this by having a non-uniform day, selling cakes and holding a tuck shop every Friday. While I appreciate we do not want our children to over indulge and wish for them to maintain a healthy balanced diet I am going to suggest that we try to arrange a rota system whereby the children can purchase either cakes or tuck shop – not both. I will speak to the School Council and ask the members to arrange this. I will also discuss the possibility of selling fruit and ask that the Council representatives raise this in their meetings to obtain the children’s views.
We have arranged for the whole school to visit Cadbury World on Monday 6th July. Details to follow shortly.
Sports News
The result of our friendly football match against St.John Fisher School on Wednesday 29th April was a 2 all draw. An enjoyable time was had by all.
Cheer Leading – a reminder that there will be no Cheer Leading meeting on Thursday 7th May. This session will take place on Thursday 14th May during the lunch break.
Play Area Construction
Erewash Borough Council has asked for your views and those of your children about the play area at Priorway Avenue which is to be refurbished. The designs, which the children have seen, will be displayed in school . Play Area consultation forms will be sent home with this newsletter and you are asked to return them by Tuesday 12th May.

SATs Week
A letter has gone out today to the parents of all Year 6 children who will be doing their SATs during the week May 11th to May 15th. Attached to it is the time table for each day. As always we ask that no appointments, e.g. dental, medical etc are made and no holidays taken for that week.
Musical Celebration
There will be a special musical event at school on Wednesday April 29th starting at 7.00 p.m. to which everyone is warmly invited. The school choir and recorder group will be performing along with a number of solo items. Entry is FREE so please come along and help to celebrate the children’s achievements. Refreshments will be available provided by our P.A. ladies. They will not make a charge for this but a donation towards their fund raising would be very much appreciated.
Internet Safety Awareness Information Sessions
Keeping children safe while they are using the internet is something that we all take very seriously. We have an acceptable use policy and rules for internet use in school. The local authority provides a filter system which blocks unsuitable sites and all internet access is supervised in school. Parents can also help to keep their children safe at home and we are holding two information sessions on Tuesday 28th April in partnership with the Infant School and Friesland School. Ms.Sue Gender from Friesland will be leading the sessions and introducing parents to the”Thinkuknow” materials regarding internet safety The first session will take place at 3. 30p.m. in the Infant School and the second at 6.30 p.m. here in the Junior School. Parents from both schools are welcome at either meeting and we would recommend that you attend if you have internet access at home which your child users.
School Nurse
Are you worried about your child? Do you need someone to talk to?
Then come along and talk to Wendy, our school nurse. She will be in school on Thursday 7th May, Thursday 4th June and Thursday 2nd July from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m. each day. Sporting News
Monday April 27th will be the last Soccer Schools meeting and the last Girls’ only lunch time meeting will be on Tuesday 28th. Richard Smith will bring in letters to start the new season for both groups for those who wish to carry on.
On Wednesday 29th April St.John Fisher School will visit Ashbrook to take part in a friendly football match. Supporters are welcome.
There will be no Cheer Leading session on Thursday 7th May. This session will take place on Thursday 14th May during the lunch break.

Uniform
Some children are still coming to school wearing trainers and some girls are wearing boots which are inappropriate for indoor wear. Will parents please ensure that children have the correct school shoes for inside school.
P.E.Kit
This is also part of school uniform. Our code for P.E. is navy blue or black shorts with red or blue T shirt, plimsolls for indoor activities and trainers for outside. Please note that football strips or other casual clothing is not acceptable for P.E.
Noah’s Friends
A Family Fun Day has been organised to raise funds to support a child suffering from a rare condition. It will take place at Derby City Church, Curzon Street, Derby, on Saturday 2nd May from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. and there will be a BBQ, bouncy castle, face painting, creative crafts, cream teas and games. Attendance
Congratulation to Class 3/4W who had the highest attendance for the week March 30th to April 3rd. As a result of their number of “highest attendances” over the weeks Class 3/4W will have a non-uniform day next Friday May 1st.
